Frequently Asked Questions

A Water Bike is a pedal-powered watercraft designed to provide a comfortable, stable, and eco-friendly way to explore lagoons, bays, lakes, and other calm waterways. Unlike traditional kayaks, which are propelled with paddles, Water Bikes use a bicycle-style pedaling system that most people find intuitive and easy to use.
Modern Water Bikes typically feature a catamaran-style design with two floating hulls, creating a highly stable platform on the water. Their elevated seating position offers greater comfort and panoramic views, making them an excellent choice for beginners, couples, families, and anyone looking to enjoy the water without previous kayaking or boating experience.
At Caribbean Chiliboats, we offer guided Water Bike tours in two of Puerto Rico’s most popular destinations. In Condado Lagoon, San Juan, guests can enjoy scenic daytime rides or join our popular Night Water Bike Tours, gliding beneath four iconic bridges while taking in the illuminated skyline of the city. In La Parguera, our guided Water Bike tours lead visitors to Puerto Rico’s famous Bioluminescent Bay, where millions of microscopic organisms naturally create one of the world’s most remarkable glowing water experiences.
Every tour begins with a safety briefing and instructions from our experienced guides, ensuring guests feel comfortable and confident before heading onto the water. The pedal-powered design, combined with the exceptional stability of our Water Bikes, allows most participants to enjoy the experience within just a few minutes.
Whether you’re looking for a relaxing daytime adventure, a memorable Night Water Bike Tour in San Juan, or an unforgettable experience at La Parguera’s Bioluminescent Bay, Water Bikes offer one of the most unique, comfortable, and enjoyable ways to explore Puerto Rico from the water.

Many first-time visitors ask whether riding a Water Bike is easier than using a traditional kayak. In most cases, yes. One of the main reasons is that Water Bikes use a bicycle-style pedaling system, a movement that most people are already familiar with. In addition, pedaling engages the legs—the largest and strongest muscle groups in the body—so many riders find it to be a more natural and less tiring way to move across the water than paddling for extended periods.
Traditional kayaks are paddle-powered and require learning basic paddling techniques, along with coordination, balance, and continuous use of the upper body. Water Bikes, on the other hand, are pedal-powered and feature a catamaran-style design with two floating hulls, an ergonomic elevated seat, and an intuitive steering system. This combination creates an exceptionally stable, comfortable, and easy-to-control platform, allowing most participants to feel confident within just a few minutes.
Unlike most traditional kayaks, Caribbean Chiliboats Water Bikes allow riders to maintain a more natural and ergonomic seating position throughout the tour. The elevated seat eliminates the need to sit at water level, providing greater comfort, especially on longer rides. In addition, because there are no paddles to hold, guests can better enjoy the scenery, take photos, and comfortably interact with family and friends while pedaling.
At Caribbean Chiliboats, our guided Water Bike Tours are designed for beginners, couples, families, and visitors of all fitness levels. Every tour begins with a safety briefing and instructions from our certified guides, ensuring every guest feels comfortable and confident before heading onto the water.
Whether you choose one of our Night Water Bike Tours in Condado Lagoon, San Juan, one of our daytime Water Bike Tours, or a guided adventure to the Bioluminescent Bay in La Parguera, no previous kayaking, cycling, or Water Bike experience is required.
Both Water Bikes and kayaks are excellent ways to explore nature and enjoy the water. If you enjoy paddling and prefer a more traditional experience, a kayak may be a great choice. If you prefer a pedal-powered watercraft with an elevated seat, exceptional stability, and intuitive handling, a Water Bike offers a comfortable, easy, relaxing, and unique way to discover the beautiful waters of Puerto Rico.

Yes. When used properly and as part of a guided tour, Water Bikes provide a safe, fun, and relaxing way to explore lagoons, bays, and other calm waterways.
At Caribbean Chiliboats, the safety of our guests is always our highest priority. Before every tour begins, all participants receive a comprehensive safety briefing where our guides explain how to operate the Water Bike, review important navigation and safety procedures, and answer any questions to ensure everyone feels comfortable and prepared before entering the water.
All participants are provided with U.S. Coast Guard (USCG)-approved life jackets, which must be worn throughout the entire tour. In addition, our guides are licensed by the Puerto Rico Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DRNA) and hold current CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and First Aid certifications. They remain with the group throughout the entire experience to provide guidance and assistance whenever needed.
Before every departure, we carefully evaluate weather conditions, wind, and water conditions. If conditions are not considered safe, tours may be delayed, rescheduled, or canceled to ensure the safety of our guests.
All of our tours are 100% guided, so you’ll never be on your own during the experience. Whether you join one of our Night Water Bike Tours in Condado Lagoon, San Juan, one of our daytime tours, or a guided adventure to the Bioluminescent Bay in La Parguera, our commitment is to provide a safe, well-organized, and memorable experience so you can enjoy Puerto Rico’s beautiful waters with complete confidence.

Water Bikes feature a catamaran-style design that provides exceptional stability on the water. Under normal use and while following your guide’s instructions, they are highly unlikely to tip over.
Their design distributes weight evenly across the water, providing excellent stability and balance throughout the tour. However, as with any watercraft, standing up, making sudden movements, or not following your guide’s instructions may affect stability.
To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, we recommend remaining seated throughout the tour and following your guide’s instructions at all times.
Thousands of first-time visitors, families, and couples have enjoyed our guided Water Bike Tours with confidence and peace of mind.

We recommend wearing comfortable clothing suitable for your Water Bike Tour, as you may get slightly wet during the experience.
San Juan Tours (Condado Lagoon)
Wear comfortable or athletic clothing. For footwear, we recommend sneakers, sport sandals, or water shoes that you don’t mind getting slightly wet.
La Parguera Tours (Bioluminescent Bay & La Parguera Keys)
We recommend wearing comfortable clothing and water shoes, as you’ll need to walk a few steps through shallow water when boarding and disembarking your Water Bike. Sport sandals with secure straps are also acceptable. Flip-flops are not recommended, as they can easily come off and make boarding or disembarking more difficult.
For Day Water Bike Tours, we also recommend bringing sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, and a reusable water bottle to stay comfortable throughout the experience.
For Night Water Bike Tours, lightweight, comfortable clothing is recommended. If you tend to get cold in the evening, you may also want to bring a light jacket or long-sleeve shirt.
If you prefer to stay completely dry after your adventure, bringing a change of clothes and a towel is always a good idea.

No. Since June 8, 2023, swimming has not been permitted in La Parguera’s Bioluminescent Bay following the implementation of Administrative Order OA-2023-02, issued by the Puerto Rico Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DRNA) to protect and preserve this fragile natural ecosystem.
Our guided Water Bike Tours are designed to allow guests to safely enjoy the beauty of the glowing waters from their Water Bikes while helping preserve this extraordinary natural phenomenon for future generations.
